The film begins with an astronomical constellation in which the Moon, Earth, and Sun are located in space. Three million years ago, a troop of apes lives in a savanna, whose daily life is determined by fear and the struggle for survival. Overnight, a three-meter-high, smooth-polished monolith appears next to their camp, which the proto-humans initially circle hesitantly.
